Hi all,
First post here, so hello everyone. I hope English is OK.
I would like to ask for some information about registering a pakettiauto.
Iv been thinking about getting a late 80's or early 90's Defender 90 with the bench or fold up seats in the back as the family 'hobby' car.
I think the car will only drive about 5000Km a year as it will be the family "hobby car". So to avoid paying 1000€+ a year 'dieselvero' I was thinking getting a pakettiauto.
I see in tulli.fi there are 5+ seat vehicles (Defender/Hilux/Ranger etc) imported as pakettiauto..
What requirements or How would I get a 6/7 seat Def90 registered as a pakettiauto :?: :?:
Any advice would be very welcome.
thank you

The answer you are looking for is: NO, you can't anymore register diesel car with more than 3 seats and lower annual tax.
5/6/7 seat van "pakettiauto" has same tax as passenger car "henkilöauto", because it's considered as "kaksikäyttöauto" (more than 1 row of seats)
But your numbers are wrong, gas defender has 300eur annual tax and diesel def 400eur as van, 1000eur as passenger car.
And if you are not driving for some time, you can take your car off road, and you dont have to pay taxes for that time.
So buy a gas defender, or try to find a diesel defender which has been registered years ago as a van, with back seats approved for temporary use. Those will have lower annual tax.
Just to clarify. The "Kaksikäyttöauto" gives a possibility for entrepreneurs to use one car partly for work and partly privately and gives a tax saving for the work use part (also in regards of purchasing the car). But in regard of what has to be paid as annual tax for the car it does not make any difference.
"Baxxter" writes about taking the car "off road" which might be a bit dubious to talk about when it comes to a Land Rover :-) What he means is "liikennekäytöstäpoisto" which you can do for the time you do not need the car. You can do this at a motor vehicle inspection centre ("katsastusasema") for a fee of about 10 euros (+ 10 euros when you are taking the car into use again). During "liikennekäytöstäpoisto" the car is excepted from annual tax but can obviously not be used either.
I would agree with "Baxxter": looking at your usage try to find a gas Defender or get an old Diesel van with seats approved for temporary use. The problem with the later is that owners of theses cars tend to like them a lot - low tax, same number of seats - and this obviously shows in the asking price.
Hi,
thanks for the information... so I cant get a car registered as a "Kaksikäyttöauto" (dual-purpose?) vehicle anymore ???
An example I guess is this.
http://www.nettiauto.com/land-rover/defender/3466008
A lot of money for what looks like a very tatty landi.
But you say a Kaksikäyttöauto would still pay about 400€.
A Petrol Defender about 300€
and a Diesel henkiloauto about 1000€
Im familar with the concept of the 'season vehicle' removal from the road register, as I have done this every winter with my Lotus/Caterham's. It save on the road insurance also which is nice
thanks for your help so far guys...
Im sure it wont be the late question I post

You can get it registered as dual-purpose (kaksikäyttöauto) vehicle, but those have same annual tax as passenger car (henkilöauto).
Any petrol engined = 300eur
Diesel van with seats in 1 row = 400eur
Diesel van with seats in 1 row AND temporary use seats for 3/4 passengers = 400eur
Diesel passenger car = 1000eur
Diesel van with seats more than in 1 row = 1000e
Seats in 1 row means driver and co-driver and maybe 1 dwarf in middle seat.
Temporary seats are allowed to have only 5cm thick padding, and nowadays you can't install them in defenders. Old ones are still legal and as Fredi wrote, it can show in asking price.
And if you are importing a defender, there are few more rules if you want customs to consider it as a lower tax van. But again, if it is customed as lower tax van (autoverolain 8§ mukainen pakettiauto) you can't have backseats.
EDIT: that defender in your link has to be "van with seats in 1 row and temporary use seats for 7 passengers

So, as I was saying to Stelok this afternoon, my perfect landi would be a ex military 90 build in late 80's with 2/3 seats in the front and 4 foldaway seats in the back...
You say that are not legal anymore.. do you mean for newer cars built after XXXX..
I guess for older cars build pre-XXXX I could still register a car fitted with these 'temporary' seats..
No?
thanks again

Temporary seats were possible to approve only before 1.1.2003 (to defenders), after that date only to vans with more than 7 cubic meters of loading space. It doesn't matter if your car is older, because "ARVA §63" (law that allowed those seats) doesn't exist anymore. So no, you can't
EDIT, not sure about that date, but sure about anything else

thank you

I wonder if that Tdi in Lohja is ex-military btw. The ad says imported to Finland in '90. The intake on one of the wings has that extra cover thing you often see on the military ones.
You're right, though, that it seems a bit tatty for that price.
