Tervehdys!
Kokemuksia TD5 -koneen lastuttamisesta? Kohteena -99 Discovery.
Miten TD5 lastutetaan, piuhan kautta vai vaihtamalla korttia vai jotenkin muuten.
Lähinnä kaipaan näkemyksiä, hyötyjä ja ennen kaikkea kokemuksia tuloksia toimenpiteistä.

no tokkopa tällä DII:lla offataan, lähinnä jotakin reipasta ripeyttä vaan kaipailisi lisää...

Miten kulutuspuoli menee, alentaako tällainen musta matolaatikko kulutusta sukat jalassa ajettaessa?

? Käsitinkö oikein ?
Yli 25 litraa normidieseliä satkulla vähän polkemalla. Mutta hinatessa jotain paras hyöty?
Mitä helvetin paljon sä saat ton kuluttamaan jos poljet jotain hinattavaa perässä?
Siis minkäs verran toi sun td5 oikein virtaa?

Hehhheh
Kyllä 25litraa satkulle on hurja kulutus, täytyy olla ihan nurkka-ajoa lämä lattiasa voimasavuista nauttien. Vakio defellä en oo saanu mitenkään menemään yli 14 litraa satkulle ja siihenkin tarvittiin helteinen sää ja yli kahen tonnin painoinen vaunu koukkuun, mäkinen maasto ja sitä rataa. 4000km norjan reissun keskikulutus samainen vaunu pepussa yms 12,4 litraa satasella.
Tässä "all you need to know" opas ja ainakin itse suosittelen koko listan läpikäymistä. Suurin ilmainen "piristys" on tuo MAP anturin putsaaminen ja turbon hukkaportin säätäminen limp moden tuntumaan.
TD5 tune up guide
In my experience TD5s seem to have enormous variations in power output. Some owners seem to believe that the electronics will keep everything in tune and that no attention is necessary, while others spend a fortune on diagnostics or part swopping to regain lost output. Hopefully this will help a few people save some money and tune up their TD5s
General mechanical health:
Service the engine incl new air filter
Remove the oil filler cap and idle the engine. If it puffs excessively the rings are suspect.
Remove the rubber hose from airbox to turbo at turbo end and inspect the compressor wheel for visible damage. Wiggle the shaft to check free play, which should be minimal. Also push and pull the shaft to check end float.
EGR system if still fitted should be disabled (ensure the valve is closed) or replaced with a blanking kit. (< 1 hour)
Oil in ECU plug. Well documented issue of engine oil getting into the injector harness and pushing up through the engine harness to the red plug of the ECU causing malfunctions. Pull the red ECU plug and inspect. If oily, clean the female connector on the ECU, the male red plug (remove the white cover) and the plugs where the injector harness joins the engine harness at the front underside of the tappet cover with electrical contact cleaner. This may improve things but often the injector harness is heat damaged and needs to be replaced. It is not too expensive. ECU and engine harness don’t need to be replaced. Whenever the tappet cover is off, record your 5 letter injector codes. (< 1 hour)
Injector copper washers or O rings. Easy and cheap to replace. If the washers are bad then fuel will escape into the cylinders when the engine is off. Fuel pump will whine or gurgle briefly when key is turned on, and engine will start with a jolt and/or knock. If O rings are bad fuel can dilute engine oil. Fuel pump may also be noisy at first, oil level could rise and engine will wear out faster due to diminished lubrication. Some people advise using TDi copper washers, or annealing the Td5 ones before use. Whenever the tappet cover is off, record your 5 letter injector codes. (1-2 hours)
MAF sensor might underread causing underfuelling (or EGR malfunction if fitted) Easiest way to test this is unplug the MAF sensor. It then gives a default value to the ECU which will cause very slight overfuelling at low loads and very slight underfuelling at high loads. If unplugging the MAF improves the response under normal driving then the sensor was faulty. Some people choose to just leave it unplugged which hurts fuel economy and top end power slightly, perhaps not enough to justify cost of a new one. (5 minutes)
Boost solenoid (Disco 2 only) is often bypassed. This solenoid prevents the wastegate modulator from seeing the boost pressure until the ECU decides to allow wastegate opening. This prevents “wastegate creep” whereby the wastegate on a mechanical system like the Defender starts to open at about ½ of the boost setpoint, slowing acceleration and losing efficiency. If you find it bypassed it is probably faulty and should be replaced (it is cheap) and piped in correctly. If it fails it can do so either to allow pressure through and give wastegate creep, or block pressure entirely which will prevent the wastegate from opening at all. Should this happen in a system with a healthy turbo it will overboost and go to limp mode, then recover when boost drops. This will cause noticeable but gentle “kangaroo-ing” at highway speeds. On a Defender a mechanical boost controller can be fitted to overcome wastegate creep but must be set up with a boost gauge. (15 minutes)
Boost piping collapsed. Remove and inspect the 2 rubber hoses between turbo and intercooler, and the one between intercooler and inlet manifold. They may be delaminated causing the inside to collapse while the outside still looks fine. Clean out the intercooler at the same time. (< 1 hour for piping, more for intercooler removal)
MAP sensor can get dirty due to EGR or normal crankcase ventilation oil/soot fouling. Remove it and clean with electrical contact cleaner. Do not stick anything into the hole as you could damage the pressure sensor. (15 minutes)
Turbo boost too low. I have found many TD5s are regulating boost around 100kPa when they should be around 120kPa. The ECU limp mode trip is at 130kPa. If you have a gauge you can connect it inline and adjust the wastegate modulator pushrod to get the right boost. Shortening the rod increases pressure. If you don’t have a gauge then progressively increase boost 1 turn at a time every few days until you start hitting the trip setpoint, then back off slightly. You must drive at highway speeds to test. (5 minutes)
AAP sensor issues. This is the sensor on the airbox that influences altitude and ambient temperature compensation. It does not have a major effect on power but if diagnostics show incorrect readings or spikes then you should replace it.
Fuel pressure too low: Cannot be measured directly or on diagnostics but will affect power significantly. A gauge on a T piece must be connected into the fuel line somewhere. Expect to see 400kPa. If the fuel pump is noisy then it could be on the way out.
Not a repair like all of the above, but replacing the centre silencer with a freeflow box improves turbo spool up and midrange. Do not just remove the box and replace with pipe on a Disco as it makes the vehicle unpleasantly loud. Defenders are already unpleasant so most owners don’t seem to mind.
If you must do diagnostics:
Remove tappet cover first and read the 5 letter code on the injectors. Ensure the ECU is programmed correctly with these codes
Check wastegate solenoid operation (it can be cycled)
Look for AAP faults
Look for underreading MAF
Check turbo boost pressure and adjust
Reset auto gearbox. This un-learns any bad habits it has developed.
Check injector balance. If balance is out it means that the injectors are compensating for an imbalance between cylinder outputs. This could be an injector issue, a piston ring or valve issue, so do not blindly change the injector without doing a compression test. If injectors remain suspect first have them tested as the tips can be replaced or cleaned which may be enough. Don’t replace all 5 injectors unless you just won the lottery or ruined them all with bad fuel. Reprogram the ECU for any replaced injector.
Thats it.
