Terve Landrover asylum inmates,
I share your illness. Forgive me but my Finnish is awful right now. That will improve in time I know. For now, perhaps you'll allow me to burden you by communicating in English?
My first concern is what will be involved in arranging insurance in Finland for such a vehicle? Is there a recognised specialist company I can speak with to arrange cover? My insurance will be valid for 30 days from arrival, so I need to get things organised sooner rather than later.

Hi and welcome to the forum, and Finland!
I think you will be pleasantly surprised with regards to insuring your vehicle here. Unlike in the UK, and, I'm guessing Ireland, modified or offroad vehicles don't fetch any special premium. Any insurance company here is probably more than happy to insure it, but shop around, prices can vary somewhat.
Since the vehicle is that old, the insurance company will mostly look at the date it was first registered and value it based on that, ignoring all modifications, improvements and additions... Good news is that you will end up paying a lot less, downside is that because of the low book value it is extremely likely to get written off in an accident. You may want to have it inspected and revalued by the insurance company to reflect it's actual value better.

That Mazda conversion sounds interesting. I have a Nissan LD28 engine on my series 3 88" and my "roverfriends" keep reminding me of that... :wink:

Welcome! And I do agree with comments by HNT.
I use IF myself, they at least give you a discount for multiple vehicles, so you may want to mention that. Since I have also other insurances there, the total discount is quite good for me. EDIT: In addition, they usually give 15% discount for the first year if you purchase it from their web site.
And if you don't use all your cars daily basis, you can take your car "off" from road use whilst it's resting on your yard or carage and save taxes and insurance of the period you don't use it.
I wouldn't know the others, so as there were already, you may need to ask tender from various companies to see their terms and to get best prices.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there something like a national meet/rally for Landrover fans in Finland during the summer? I'll miss the UK shows this year so it would be nice to have some other landy gathering to look forward to.

It's a really good conversion for heavy towing work.
The Nissan LD and FD's are great conversions too. A friend has a 2 door Range Rover with a 3.5 4 cylinder Nissan - It's a great towing machine with an auto gearbox.

Unfortunately, I don't think such meet exists for Landrover fans only. Correct me, if I am wrong on this issue. However, there is an annual meet/pique-nique for all British car and bike fans http://www.sortila.fi/britit/ajankohtais...4-ilmo.pdf including Landrover fans.
It seems you already got pretty good advice insurance. I could add that we also have a classification for old "museum car", but it requires car to be completely in original condition and that needs to be inspected, also you are allowed to drive only 20 days per year. But then your car annual tax and insurance is really cheap.
I would want to point out another important topic, assuming you are moving to Finland on permanent basis. Finnish car registration legislation is a nightmare and especially if you are planning on bringing several cars to Finland, it can be tricky. I am not any expert on this topic, but as far as I know: basic rule is that you can bring 1 car per person without paying car tax which is something 15-40% of car value. And you pay also VAT on the tax! For newer cars that means serious money, and there is even limit on it so for really expensive cars you need to pay some tax always. Additionally you need to register your car in Finland and that should be fairly easy coming from EU country with EU approved car, but if you have done lot of modifications I don't know for sure, could be tricky if modifications are not allowed in Finland. I am sure there are better experts on these questions available and many people bring used cars from abroad due to price and availability, however, these people do pay this car tax etc and in your case you should try to avoid it completely as you are moving from abroad 'muuttoauto' in Finnish. Maybe you have already considered all these topics and this was a rant in vain. For some these regulations have created nasty surprises. It could be for example that your family should bring two cars when you move (or within some specified time) to avoid car tax. Most likely those two should be the most valuable of cars you plan to bring.

I think you'll be OK with the modified truck. A car that you bring along with you doesn't have to follow all the Finnish rules, as long as the inspection finds it safe.
This is only fair, because you could have built the same truck here, legally, before current laws.
BTW, if you happen to know a 101FC for a decent price, I'm interested.

A friend here has a 101 GS - He wanted €2500 for it - It need new tyres and to be tidied up. The journey to Finland would make it an expensive proposition!

Not particularly LR rally, but if you are interested in taking part at an offroad tour through Finland from south to north, you should consider this: http://www.finlandoffroad.fi/index_english.php It is performed this year from 27th of July to 9th of August, and gives a good possibility to meet other Finnish offroaders & see beautiful Finnish countryside. It is not necessary to participate the whole rally, you could choose the days which suit you best and sign up only to them.

Ah yes, I've been there. We visited the castle and spent time exploring the town. The cruise boats there are fantastic looking, very much time spent sanding and varnishing them I'm sure!
Good to know you're not too far away. I'm figuring out already how far I'll need to go to borrow or loan parts! :lol:

Henrik, good man! I'll certainly be in touch. We've friends in Tampere and I was there many, many times on the Ryanair flight that used to go direct to Dublin. That was back when my wife lived in Helsinki before we married and I used to visit every 3-4 weeks.

Here's one more who's pretty much "done" with IT being there since '85 in various roles as a specialist/tech and last >15 years project/program management and service delivery management for multinational/global programs/clients....definitely I will also look something really different and enjoyable for the rest of my working years - now it's said out loud  hock:...the sooner the better :roll:

We're booked on the Rostock to Helsinki sailing on the 21st, departing at 05:30 from Germany. I took this sailing a couple of months ago with a good friend (who happens to be married to my wifes friend from Heinav...!), so by default we looked at Rostock for our own journey north. I can see now that I should in fact have booked the Travemunde route instead.
Dare I say I've just missed out on a chance to break up the 'boredom' of the ferry sailing with Landrover conversation because we'll be on different crossings? :roll:

Here's the old girl now, almost ready. The heavy duty sills/sliders, a custom fabricated gearbox crossmember and a few final brackets are all being hot dip galvanised on Tuesday morning and will be fitted by Tuesday evening. I'm fitting a new starter motor tomorrow, then bleeding the IP/injectors and should be able to start road testing.... I'll put up a detailed project thread in time, but this is a teaser:

Yep, close but no banana. We will board the Travemünde ferry on thursday the 20th and it disembarks at 03:00 friday. We're gonna go for a pay and play day with two Defenders to Mammutpark and camp there during the final two days. You are naturally welcome to drop by if it fits your timetable.
