July 1981
Announcement of four-door Range Rover. £85 million / one million sq ft North Block rebuilding complete- Range Rover assembly, and four-cylinder engine machining and assembly concentrated there.

Early 1982
All car manufacture at Solihull ceased. `SD 1 `plant mothballed until 1984.

August 1982
Automatic transmission ( Chrysler Torqueflite ) made available for Range Rover.

March 1983
Announcement of new generation Land Rover One-Ten, with coil spring suspension and 110 in wheelbase. Five speed all-synchromesh gearbox on four-cylinder models. V8 version with Range Rover transmission also available.

July 1983
Range Rover now fitted with five speed all-synchromesh type gearbox instead of four-speed.

January 1984
Introduction of 2,495cc diesel four-cylinder engine, directly replacing 2,286cc type - all relevant models.

June 1984
Introduction of new generation Land-Rover Ninety, with shortened version of One-Ten chassis, and coil spring suspension - but wheelbase actually 92,9 in !. Available only with four-cylinder engines, and with five speed all synchromesh gearbox. Important Range Rover facelift, including new facia style, one piece front door side windows.

May 1985
Launch of five speed all synchromesh Spanish-built `Santana`manual gearbox for V8-engined Land-Rovers: at same time, V8 engine made available for the first time on the Ninety model. Series III assembly ended a few weeks later.

September 1985
Introduction of 2,495cc petrol four-cylinder engine, directly replacing 2,286cc type-all relevant models.

October 1985
Range Rover Vogue models feature 165bhp V8 fuel injected engine- incorporating the Lucas L electronic fuel injection system. Automatic ZF4 HP22 four speed gearbox replaces the Chrysler three-speed originally fitted. Many improvements to both interior and exterior, including new paint process.

October 1985
Completion of 1 500 000th vehicle off the production lines at Solihull.

April 1986
Launch of Range Rover Turbo D ( diesel engine ) model.

June 1986
First showing of new-generation forward-control Land-Rover, with V8 engine, and five-speed manual gearbox. No definite production plans released at this time.

October 1986
Introduction of 85bhp turbocharged version of existing 2,5-litre diesel engine, optional for all Land-Rovers

December 1986
Changes to Range Rover for 1987 include new grille, concealed bonnet hinges. All four-door Range Rovers now to be fitted with 165bhp fuel-injected engine.
